Madsen Giersing designed the formwork used for the construction of the insitu concrete deck at the Navy Ammunitioning Facility in Twofold Bay. The wharf is positioned in the southern part of the bay and is subject to adverse sea conditions, making the use of marine equipment very difficult.

To overcome these construction issues, the formwork system was supported from above the deck, removing any requirement for access below the deck once the deck has been cast. The formwork, supported by a stub column cast into the top of the pile, was split in the centre of the deck enabling it to be removed from each side with the use of a lifting frame.

Using this formwork system, it was possible to achieve a 4-day cycle for the construction of the deck.
