Madsen Giersing designed the temporary works for both the Common User Wharf and Bulks Liquids Berth.
The Common User Wharf is a 110m long vertical wall consisting of 1.5m diameter steel piles drilled and driven into a rock seabed. The main construction equipment used to install the piles was a 150t crawler crane with a Soilmec drill rig. A modular false work system was designed to enable the crane to walk along the length of the wall. Consisting of a lower headstock assembly, headstock beams and a crane mat with all elements pinned together, removed the requirement for welding and cutting of members.
The Bulks Liquids Berth is a 156m long x 27m wide concrete deck supported on vertical steel piles. The deck consists of precast planks spanning between insitu cast band beams. The formwork system was comprised of steel frames supported on hanging beams from cast in temporary columns in the top of the piles. The form panels were stripped through the hole, which was generated between the band beams, reducing the requirement for access below the deck after the deck had been cast.
